Points for Speeding Tickets in Illinois

Illinois assesses points for many types of traffic violations. The following are examples:

Speeding 5 to 50 points
Failure to keep in proper lane 20 points
Failure to obey traffic sign 20 points
Possession of open alcohol container 25 points
Failure to stop and render aid after accident
(property damage only)		 25 points

If you have three convictions for traffic violations within a 12-month period, your driver's license can be suspended for a period of time. The following are suspension periods for a driver who has not had his or her license suspended or revoked for the past seven years:

  • 0 to 14 points ― no action
  • 15 to 44 points ― 2-month suspension
  • 45 to 74 points ― 3-month suspension
  • 75 to 89 points ― 6-month suspension
  • 90 to 99 points ― 9-month suspension
  • 100 or more points ― 12-month suspension

You may be imprisoned for driving with a suspended license.
